Wednesday 20th May

Waking up at 7:00, as usual, we got ready for another long, warm day. After eating breakfast, we arrived at a sports centre where many activities were planned, however we were greeted by the torrential rain, so nobody could take part ( the games were supposed to be outside, you see) We, therefore, had our snack, which was another gigantic sandwich, before setting back out for our tour.

Thankfully, the sun had came out again this afternoon as we pulled up at  the Cathedral of St. Dimitrius, where we learned lots of facts about his history. He was arrested by the Romans for being a Christian and was put in a cramped cell ,which now remains under the basilica.; we got to go and explore it. He was questioned many times and the Romans tried to force him to deny his religion, however he didn't give in. Eventually, they made a deal with Dimirius' close friend that if he beat one of their strongest generals they would free him-knowing that he couldn't possibly succeed.  Although he was much weaker, Dimirius' friend was victorious as he knew he had the help of God on his side. Consequently, the Romans were furious and decided  to arrested and kill both Christians. Then, when only their bones remained, people claimed that they had seen the Saint guarding the walls of Thessaloniki and afterwards made him their patron saint. Not only this, but the building was absolutely amazing, the art and intricate details were fantastic. It was great to be somewhere so old and important. It is actually hard to believe how old the building is!!
Next we went to see the remains of the original city walls, before visiting the town's most famous landmark- the White tower(it was here, sitting directly in front of the huge building, where Anna exclaimed' Keira, where is the white tower, isn't it somewhere in this area?')

After seeing the White Tower, which used to be a prison, we walked over to the restaurant. A traditional geek taverna. We had cheese pies and salad to start then chicken fillets followed by ice cream. We didn't enjoy it as much as our other Greek meals....except for the ice cream.

Then we walked back to the hotel, collecting souvenirs as we went. Once back in the hotel, washed and re-dressed, we headed back out for a visit into the square, where Miss Sinnott got pooped on by a seagull, luckily it was only s teeny bit on her t shirt. Ever prepared, she swiftly wiped it away with a wipe (she is a schlemiel.)

Looking forward to a day on the beach tomorrow, followed by a walk around a beautiful village and a big celebration party on the evening. Another busy day!!!!

good night and lots of love from Keira and Anna

  1. Hi Anna,
It's a shame you couldn't take part in the sports activities today due to the rain but coming from England you will be used to that on sports days. It sounds like you have learnt a great deal about Greek history, you will have to tell us more about it when you come home. It sounds like you have had a really busy and tiring day so it will be good for you to have a relaxing day on the beach tomorrow before going to the party at night time.
Hope you have a great day tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday.
Lots of love Mam, Dad and Emily xxx

  2. Hi Keira
What a shame about the rain today! Hope you had your waterproof jackets, I bet it was almost like being at home :-(
Glad it didn't last too long though and that you had a good afternoon. You are all going to be experts on Greek history by the time you come home.
We all feel very sorry for Miss Sinnott, though they do say bird poop is meant to be lucky!
Tomorrow sounds like a fab day - I bet the beach will be beautiful.
Now for a message from Zak which he wants to type himself:
Hope you have a great time at the beach(Hope there isn't any bird poop!)
Mam again - sleep well sweetheart, what a fantastic experience you are having.
Lots of love, mam, Alex, Zakkkky and baby (who is coming next Thursday by the way!)

Kalimera Keira, it sounds as if you are having a brilliant time. Its a shame about the rain spoiling things yesterday morning, but at least your afternoon was better. We also went to the the cathedral and White Tower last year, when we were in Thessoloniki with your Gran and Uncle John, and thoroughly enjoyed it too. Have a great day on the beach, but make sure you use plenty of sun cream. Hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Lots of love, Aunty Judith & Uncle Graham. YASSOO. xxx
